Originally based in Minneapolis, Minn., the name was based on the state motto "The Land of 10,000 Lakes." Despite the lack of lakes in Los Angeles, the team kept the name when it relocated in 1960.
Orlando Magic
The Orlando organization and Orlando Sentinel held a community-wide competition to select the expansion teams nickname, much the same way it was done in Charlotte for the Bobcats. The final two nicknames for the Orlando team were the Magic and Juice. Juice referred to the immense Florida orange juice industry. Magic was in reference to the Orlando-based Disney World, a world-famous amusement park which opened in 1971. Disney World's first theme park was called Magic Kingdom . Now it all comes together.
Denver Nuggets
Before the Modern team there was an original NBA team called the Nuggets. Both teams take their name from the Colorado Gold rush of 1859

Cleveland Cavaliers
The team Cavalier refers to someone who supported the royalist during the English civil war. The most likely derivitive for the name of the team may be a corruption of the word Chivalier, which is a French Cavalryman. One very famous Cavalryman was a George A Custer, leader of the massicred 7th cavalry at the little bighorn. Custer was born in Ohio.
NOW these stupid names/mascots make sense. i feel much better about calling someone a nugget now.
